About the author

Hello,

I am Victius Maximus the creator and author of this website. Born in Harrow - just north of London - in 1953 and 6' 2" tall, I now live in Welwyn Garden City, which is near St. Albans, the site of Verulamium, the third largest town in Roman times.

By profession, I am a freelance computer systems designer/analyst/programmer and have travelled to many far flung places in the world both for the government and private companies.

Why this site was created

I first became interested in British Roman history while at school and became fascinated by the highly advanced society they built in this country

Living near Verulamium meant that I could study Roman history and have easy access to information on Roman life. As I began to delve into the details of Roman Britain, it soon became apparent that the Romans were as far advanced in all aspects of life as space aliens would be to us today.

As my knowledge of the Romans grew so did my desire to share this information with as any people as possible.

So in November 1999, I began work on this website. Firstly I wrote about British Roman history. Then I began to realise that there were very few books covering a wide range of topics about the Romans. Some covered the history, while others concentrated on the innovations the Romans brought to this country. I soon found the Internet was the most effective way to get as much information to as many visitors as possible.

In March 2000, the website became live via my free webspace. In March 2001, it moved from this temporary location to the official 'Romans in Britain' website you see today.

December 2004 - The future of this site is uncertain.
It looks as though I will either have more time to spend on the site, or there is a limited time for it's existence. This site has been going in one form or another for over five years now and it has brought so much enjoyment to so many people. At this time of year the site gets about 5,000 hits a day, but in spring and late summer this rises to over 15,000.

The future of the site is uncertain as I was told yesterday I have oesteophytosis (Arthritis of the spine) which means I am permanently disabled. It's incredible how a few short months can force such a change in lifestyle. For someone who has been parachuting and scuba diving both in the UK and far flung foreign lands to have trouble even walking a few yards is a real eye opener. But it does make you receptive to the plight of others.

October 2006 - Limited scope
A few months ago, I was diagnosed with Asthma. It is now suspected I also have angina. (Inherited from my father's side of the family.)

What will happen in time is uncertain. I will try to keep the site going for as long as possible but I cannot make any promises.God has decided on a change of direction and if He decrees this, in the long term it will be for the best.

December 2006 - Heart problems
Now I have Ischemia. It's a condition where the heart is not getting its essential blood supply. This is due to the small blood vessels in the heart being clogged with cholesterol. I have been put onto two sets of tablets and a spray. The updates to the site are going slowly now as I spend a lot of time sleeping and it hurts to move because of the pains in my upper chest, shoulder and upper arm. Sometimes the pains sear through the area like a cross between a strong electic shock knife. This is why the new site has been delayed.

Donations or sponsorship?
I have been toying with the idea of getting sponsorship for the site. This is against my principles as I try to keep the site advert free. Not having worked for three years because of ill health and with an expensive site to nurture, I am looking to find a way to get enough in the way of income to keep the site running. If anyone has any ideas about the legal side of this, it would be appreciated.

If anyone would like to help with articles etc., that would be much appreciated. Of course I cannot pay for your submissions, all I can do is put a credit on each page you create.

If you would like to know more about assisting with the site, please contact me .

Currently this site consists of 432 pages.
